Caswell County North Carolina

by Tom Ashworth

The Carolina Igneous Belt, in Caswell and parts of the adjoining counties, is the second most important gold mining region of North Carolina. It varies from 15 to 30 mile in width. Within the Caswell County portion, there are very many old workings. All the regional stream gravels contain placer gold. The mines in the area are the probable source of the Placer told. The Counties in this belt are Caswell, Guilford, Davidson, Rowan and Mecklenburg. The most productive lode mines were in the other counties, but good placer is in Caswell. You will need a geologic map to follow this Igneous Belt.
