I just got a vlf 555 d and no manuel could any one help me with the best settings or prehaps an old manuel

Hate to tell ya this but about the only place to find a manual for that antique is the fisher museum!!! Call or email Los Banos and give'er a try. John

INSTRUCTIONS FOR FISHER VLF 551D DISCRIMINATOR METAL DETECTOR

Normal lift a minimum 24" off ground - turn volume full CW

Put Battery Position to "BATTERY" to test the battery, then return to NORMAL

Push the red button on the end of the handle, then rotate the TUNING CONTROL to 30 to 40 on the scale. Release the red button.

Lower the coil to ground surface - if the audio tone and scale falls to zero, raise the coil to 24" and rotate the GND REJ control ccw one number - Press the red button to retune then release and repeat previous steps.

If the audio tone and scale increases the end rejection has been adjusted too far. Reverse until balanced. When GND REJ has been obtained, press the red button and adjust the tone to an operating point (i.e. 10-15 on the meter). Release the Red Button. Happy hunting

I have a 555-D and I still use it mostly freshwater beaches and in the water with the underwater coil. I will look for the manual have it somewhere just have to locate and I'll put it on a PDF file if I find it. As far as settings you have to play with it, alot of iron min. soil in New Jersey so I can't use the straight Discrim.mode. First I ground comp. in normal mode them I bring the sensitivity up till the it gets erratic so I back off till it stops and re-ajust the groun comp. now I set the Discrim. Adjustment try and air adj. to keep a nickel from goin out and your set. Now sweep in all metals mode, when you come across a target do an X-pinpoint and go directly over the targe and bring the detector to the ground now this is the important part, once on the ground over the target press the toggle to DISCRIM and let the button go and SLOWLY move the coil off the target if the sound goes away dig it if the sound gets louder it most likely junk . This is what they call REVERSE DISCRIM. takes a little practice but in min. ground it when you can't stay in Discrm mode. The coil will tune to the target. You can go higher with the iscrim if you have heavy trash. Been working mine that way for years. Anymore help let me know.

Yes life is short and never live your life as it comes to you. You could change many things for go for it. Remember God help those who help themselves.
