Franklin County North Carolina

From 1840 to 1935, placer mining was sporadic in this area. Both stream placers and saprolite deposits were worked, but scarcity of water for hydraulic mining was the main stopping feature. The total gold production is estimated at 71,000 ounces.

MINES:

Portis Mine - this mine is located .4 miles west of the Nash County line, close to Sandy Creek. It was worked between 1835-1935, total production was about $9,000,000.

Van Alston Mine - is located near Sandy Creek.

White House Mine - is located near Fishing Creek, the mine contained 613 acres. The gold is in residual soils and gravel beds.
