K-25 LOWER INDEPENDENCE CANYON CLAIM

LOCATION

RIVER:Klamath River

COUNTY:Siskiyou County

STATE:California

Is not marked accurately on the New 49'ers claim map. The center block of the claim, as shown on the map, does not belong to the club - but adjoins several parcels of private property which is blocked by gates up on Hwy. 96. The upriver boundary sign is posted on a tree alongside Hwy. 96, located 13.3 miles below Happy Camp - or about a mile downriver from the Independence bridge. The boundary is about 200 yards downriver from Crawford Creek, which passes under Hwy. 96 through a very large culvert. The lower boundary is marked down along the river. The private property owners have asked our member to please stay off the private property. The upper end of the claims can be accessed by various paths and trails which have been created along the hillside. There is one old road which extends part way down to the river which some members are using. This is located in a large Hwy. 96 pull off, just upriver from the most upriver private property. The location is marked with a claim sign. Camping can be done on this large pull off.

PROSPECTS

This is, perhaps, potentially one of the richest mining properties owned by the club. More than 1,000 ounces of gold have been dredged from the claim just above during the past several years. Some members have sampled and mined on the upper end of this claim and found the deposits to be rich. The challenge is to overcome the access problems. Some people use jet boats and other winch dredges down the deep canyon. I have found this to be a very challenging claim.
