Mecklenburg County North Carolina

by Tom Ashworth

In Charlotte, within the city limits, 1 mile southwest of intersection of Trade and Tryon Streets, you can find placer gold.

MINES:

Capps Mine - was famed for quality and amount of ore. It was a lode gold mine.

Clark Mine - was a lode gold mine.

Gibson Mine - was a lode goldmine.

Hopewell Mine - along with several other nearby mines produced lode gold, with pyrite and copper.

Kerns Mine - along with several other nearby mines produced lode gold, with pyrite and copper.

McGinn Mine - produced lode gold.

Rudisil Mine - the principal gold producers (along with the St. Catherine Mine) in Mecklenburg County, are in the city of Charlotte about half a mile apart on opposite ends of the same vein. The Rudisil mine, discovered in l829, produced $30,000 in gold during 1 month in 1830, thereafter, ownership of the property changed several times. The mine operated from 1840 until the outbreak of the Civil War, from 1880 to 1887, and from 1905 to 1908. In 1934 the mine was pumped out, reopened, and was productive through 1937. It was idle again from 1937 through 1959. Total gold production from these two mines was probably not less than 60,000 ounces. The country rock at the Rudisil mine is granite and schist. The ore is in pockets in two quartz veins known as the "back vein" and the "front vein". These veins follow approximately the granite schist contact and are cut by several diabase dikes. The ore bodies consist chiefly of intensity fractured pyrite and quartz and are located at places where the veins flatten operated 1829-1938, producing over $1,000,000

St. Catherine Mine - see Rudisil Mine.

Stephen Wilson Mine - was a lode gold producer.
